Denny Hamlin won’t race this weekend after all.

Hamlin, who has missed the last three races recovering from a compression fracture in his back, Tweeted that his planned return this weekend at Richmond International Raceway won’t happen as hoped.

“Unfortunately I won't be racing this weekend at Richmond,” Hamlin posted on Twitter. “It kills me to not be in the car for my team and sponsors but after long discussions with the doctors we have decided to wait on my return back to racing. Thanks to all of my fans who have sent encouraging messages over the last month. I'll be back in no time.”

Richmond is Hamlin’s home track and he very much wanted to race this weekend. After Hamlin suffered the injury in a last-lap, head-on crash at Auto Club Speedway last month, he said doctors expected him to be out for five races.

Hamlin is currently 26thin the NASCAR Sprint Cup points, but he still could make the Chase for the Sprint Cup if he can will a couple of races and finish NASCAR’s 26-race regular season in the top 20 in points.

Brian Vickers is replacing Hamlin temporarily in the seat of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
