Iran: Quake rattles region near nuke reactor

TEHRAN, Iran –  Iran says a moderate earthquake rattled a region near the country's main nuclear reactor, but there were no reports of damage or deaths in the surrounding area.

The official Islamic Republic News Agency says Monday's quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 and was centered near Kaki, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Bushehr on the Persian Gulf coast.

A more powerful 6.1 temblor struck the same area last month, killing at least 37 people and raising calls for greater international safety inspectors at the nuclear reactor in Bushehr.

Iran said there was no damage to the reactor in last month's quake. The IRNA report Monday did not specifically address the reactor, but said there were no fatalities or damage in the latest quake.

Magnitude-6.2 quake hits near Guatemala City

GUATEMALA CITY –  The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that a magnitude-6.2 earthquake has struck near Guatemala City.

Guatemalan authorities had no immediate reports of damage.

The USGS said Monday that the earthquake was located 3 miles (6 kilometers) northwest of San Jose Pinula and had a depth of 200 kilometers (124 miles).

GUATEMALA CITY –  The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that a magnitude-6.2 earthquake has struck near Guatemala City.

Guatemalan authorities had no immediate reports of damage.

The USGS said Monday that the earthquake was located 3 miles (6 kilometers) northwest of San Jose Pinula and had a depth of 200 kilometers (124 miles).

TOKYO –  A government panel has revised sharply upward the estimated damages expected from a quake expected to strike in the Pacific off the coast of central Japan, raising the urgency of disaster preparedness for much of the country's eastern coast.

The Cabinet Office said in a report carried by all major newspapers that the estimate of 220 trillion yen ($2.3 trillion) in damage was based on expectations for a magnitude 9 earthquake striking in the Nankai Trough, which runs from just southwest of Tokyo to the east of the southern island of Kyushu.

A magnitude 9 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast in March 2011, unleashing a massive tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people.

The Cabinet intends to use the higher damage estimate in drawing up disaster preparedness plans.

Quake hits Papua New Guinea; no damage or tsunami

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea –  A strong magnitude-6.7 earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea but there are no immediate reports of damage and no regional tsunami alert.

Chris McKee, the assistant director of the Geophysical Observatory in Port Moresby, said the earthquake's epicenter was relatively deep and some way offshore so it was unlikely to have caused major problems.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck Monday morning about 320 kilometers (198 miles) north of the capital Port Moresby and was centered about 84 kilometers (52 miles) below sea level.

Papua New Guinea is on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. It's where most of the world's seismic activity occurs.

Alaska quake felt in Anchorage and nearby towns

ANCHORAGE, Alaska –  Authorities in Alaska say an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 was felt in Anchorage and areas to the northwest.

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center reports that the quake struck shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday. It was centered 28 miles northwest of Anchorage.

The quake was felt throughout the Cook Inlet region. There were no reports of damage.
