Man stabs 4 people at church in Albuquerque

Police say a man stabbed four people at a Catholic church in Albuquerque as a Sunday mass was nearing its end.

Police spokesman Robert Gibbs says a man in his 20s jumped over several pews at St. Jude's Church around noon on Sunday and walked up to the choir area where he began his attack.

The injuries to the four church-goers weren't life-threatening. All four were being treated at hospitals.

Numerous parishioners subdued the attacker and held him down until police arrived.

Gibbs says the attacker is in custody but that police don't yet know his identity, the motive for the stabbings, whether he had any ties to the victims or whether he regularly attended the church.

The stabbings occurred as the choir had just begun its closing hymns.

April 14, 2013: Firefighters extinguish a fire at a hotel in Xiangyang city in central China's Hubei province. A fire at an Internet cafe spread to a hotel in central China on Sunday, killing 11 people and injuring 50 others, state media and firefighters said.AP

A fire at an Internet cafe spread to a hotel on the upper floors of a building in central China, killing 13 people and injuring 50 others.

Some of the hotel guests escaped and firefighters rescued others from the building in Xiangyang city in Hubei province. The fire started just after 6:30 a.m. Sunday and was extinguished before 9 a.m., the official Xinhua News Agency said.

It said 42 of the hotel's 50 rooms were occupied.

Two Xiangyang firefighters said the fire started in an Internet cafe on the floor below the hotel in a five-story building. They refused to be identified, as is common with Chinese officials.

One of the firefighters said the Internet cafe was on the second floor and the hotel on the three floors above. He said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Footage shown on the state-run China News Service showed smoke billowing out of the hotel's windows as firefighters sprayed water at the building and one climbed up a rope. A man and a woman were shown awaiting rescue at one window, the man covering his mouth with a cloth. A woman climbed down a ladder, helped by firefighters. Inside the hotel, bedding was blackened, as was a corridor filled with burned debris.

4 people shot, 1 fatally, in Coney Island, police say

A gunman who entered a Coney Island public housing development apartment and shot four people, killing one, is the subject of a manhunt, police said Friday.

Police are searching for 29-year-old Joseph Brown, who they identified as a suspect. Authorities said it was unclear what prompted the shootings.

The shooting victims weren't identified by police.

According to police, Brown knocked on the door of an apartment in the Gravesend Houses and was let in by a 62-year-old woman. Brown went into a back bedroom, shut the door and then fired shots, police said. A 24-year-old man was shot in the head.

Brown then came out of the room and shot the woman who had answered the door in the stomach.

A third man was shot in the head and killed. The fourth victim, a 40-year-old male, was grazed in the head by a gunshot and treated at the scene.

Police say there were three other people in the apartment who were not shot, including a 10-year-old boy.

The woman and the 24-year-old man were in critical condition at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, police said.
