Plaintiffs in lawsuit against Browns owner's company hire former FBI Director Louis Freeh

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh's firm has been hired by trucking companies suing Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's company, Pilot Flying J.

Pilot Flying J, the nation's largest diesel fuel retailer, has been alleged to have bilked customers out of rebates.

Plaintiffs attorney Mark Tate confirmed to WBIR-TV in Knoxville and to the Plain Dealer in Cleveland on Wednesday that Freeh has agreed to work on the lawsuit filed after federal agents raided Pilot's headquarters last month.

Jimmy Haslam bought the Browns last year. He is the brother of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.

The FBI alleges members of Pilot's sales team deliberately withheld rebates to boost Pilot profits and pad sales commissions. No criminal charges have been filed.

Former Packers defensive back Charles Woodson to meet with Denver Broncos on Wednesday

Charles Woodson is set to visit with the Broncos on Wednesday for both sides to see if Denver is a good fit.

Aside from a meeting with the San Francisco 49ers after the Green Bay Packers released him in February, the 36-year-old defensive back has drawn little interest as a free agent.

Denver could prove the perfect spot for Woodson, who's hoping to play a 16th NFL season. He would likely compete with Mike Adams and Quinton Carter at strong safety or serve as an extra defensive back on passing downs for the AFC powerhouse.

Broncos front-office boss John Elway told 5,000 season ticket-holders in a call last week that he felt good about the safety position but didn't close the door on adding another veteran at the position.

Air Force says 5 former Lackland commanders punished after sex scandal

  • LuisWalker.jpg

July 16, 2012: U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Luis A. Walker arrives from a lunch break during his court martial at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.AP/The San Antonio Express-News

The U.S. Air Force says it disciplined five former commanders at a San Antonio base for not reporting problems quickly or taking appropriate action in what has turned into the military branch's worst sex scandal.

The confirmation came as the 18th military trial in the scandal started Wednesday.

A former wing commander, a former group commander and three former squadron commanders, as well as a senior noncommissioned officer, were disciplined last fall after an investigation into instructor sexual misconduct at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, said Maj. Lori Hodge, a spokeswoman for the Air Education and Training Command. In some cases, a commander was not informed of problems in a timely manner and at other times a commander didn't take appropriate action after knowing about a problem, she said.

Their names and how they were disciplined were not revealed because they didn't go through the military court system, Hodge said. Federal privacy laws prohibit the Air Force from discussing administrative actions, which include counseling, admonitions and reprimands and are not considered punishment, Hodge said.

None were assigned to Lackland at the time of the discipline, she said. As of last summer, about three dozen Lackland instructors had lost their jobs in the previous year, but base officials said most were not removed for sexual misconduct.

A group commander and a squadron commander also were removed from command.

Col. Glenn Palmer was ousted in August as attention to the scandal intensified. He had arrived at Lackland in 2011 and was in charge when allegations involving more than a dozen instructors began to mount within his 737th Training Group, where he was group commander. In June, the Air Force relieved Lt. Col. Mike Paquette as commander of the 331st Training Squadron that also had been under scrutiny. A military attorney described it as a loss of confidence in Paquette's leadership.

Every new American airman reports for eight weeks of basic training at Lackland. About one in five trainees are women, and most of the nearly 500 instructors are men. Between 30,000 and 40,000 airmen graduate each year.

Although the sexual misconduct at Lackland apparently began in 2009, allegations came to light in June 2011, when basic military training instructor Staff Sgt. Luis Walker was accused of sexually assaulting a trainee, according to Gen. Edward A. Rice Jr., commander of the Air Education and Training Command who ordered the independent probe of all training units last year.

Walker was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping one female recruit and sexually assaulting several others.

So far, 17 instructors at Lackland have been convicted of misconduct with trainees -- from fraternizing to sexual assault, said Oscar Balladares, a Lackland spokesman. More cases are under investigation, he said.

Staff Sgt. Emily J. Allen, whose court-martial started Wednesday, faces up to a year in jail if convicted of charges that include having sex with a male trainee.

Former Cy Young winner Price picks up first win of 2013

Ben Zobrist went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Matt Joyce hit a two-run homer as the Tampa Bay Rays downed the Chicago White Sox, 8-3, in the finale of a four-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.

Jose Lobaton had a solo homer and Evan Longoria added an RBI double for the Rays, who have won seven of their last 10 games.

David Price (1-2) gave up three runs on six hits while striking out nine in seven innings to pick up his first win of the season. Despite the slow start this season, Price has just three losses over his last 24 starts dating back to June 19, 2012.

"David was good, he pitched really, really well. His fastball was good, he had a really good hook and good change-ups. I thought he was really good," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Paul Konerko had a two-run homer and Adam Dunn drove in a run for the White Sox, losers in six of their last nine.

Nate Jones (0-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Starter Dylan Axelrod was tagged for three runs on four hits while fanning three over six frames.

Tampa Bay plated three runs in the eighth to go up 6-3. Sean Rodriguez opened the inning with a base hit to center and moved to second on Jones' wild pitch. After Matt Joyce drew a walk to put two on with one out, Zobrist laced a base hit up the middle to bring Rodriguez around.

Jones then walked Longoria to load the bases, spelling the end of his day. Matt Thornton was able to retire James Loney before being replaced by Jesse Crain. Crain was able to get Ryan Roberts to hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball to right, but Rios dropped the ball allowing Joyce and Zobrist to score.

Zobrist knocked in Desmond Jennings with a base hit to center and Longoria scored Joyce with a double down the left-field line in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.

Dunn scored Rios with a single to center in the first inning, but Lobaton tied the game with his homer in the third.

Konerko's two-run shot in the bottom half of the third gave the White Sox a 3-1 edge, but Joyce knotted things up with his two-run blast in the sixth.

"They were swinging the bats well, we just couldn't hold them down. We got off to a good start, but you have to hand it to Price, he settled down and shut us down and their bullpen did a nice job ," Konerko said.

Game Notes

Tampa Bay tied a franchise record with at least one home run in 15 straight games. The Rays also hit a homer in 15 consecutive games in 2009 ... The White Sox will open a brief eight-game road trip on Tuesday when they visit the Texas Rangers ... The White Sox have played just four games this season decided by more than three runs ... Earlier on Sunday, the White Sox placed starting pitcher Gavin Floyd on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury. Former rebels besiege Libyan premier's office

About 200 former rebel fighters in Libya have besieged the prime minister's office, demanding that he resign.

The militia members, who did not threaten violence, want Prime Minister Ali Zidan to step down in accordance with a political isolation law banning members of the former regime from political life.

He served as an ambassador under Moammar Gadhafi, who was ousted in an eight-month civil war.

The law is controversial because it bans anyone who worked with Gadhafi from 1969 until he was killed in 2011.

The prime minister's convoy was seen moving around the capital, Tripoli, last week with more security guards than usual — after an influx of militias from around the country.

Former ATF agent gunned down while walking his dog in Virginia, police say

Police have charged a Woodbridge man with murder, accusing him of fatally shooting a retired federal agent who was out walking his dog.

Prince William County Police charged 25-year-old Aric Alexander Smith with first-degree murder and armed robbery.

Killed in Wednesday night's slaying was 55-year-old Gregory L. Holley Sr., also of Woodbridge. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said Holley was an ATF agent in Chicago, Atlanta and Washington and was the ATF's special agent in charge in Detroit. He concluded his career as a deputy assistant inspector general for the Department of Treasury, from which he retired in 2009.

Police say Smith was arrested fleeing from the scene by an off-duty police officer. They say Smith was found in possession of personal property belonging to Holley.

Police do not believe the two knew each other and say the gun used in the slaying was reported stolen last week.

Holley's family said he was an active volunteer at his church, New Life Anointed Ministries International.

"Greg's life work was about fighting violent crime, and unfortunately it was violent crime that took his life," the family said in a statement.
